Mutual Aid - Fatal MVA Candia Fire-Rescue was alerted to respond mutual aid to Deerfield on Stage Road by the fairgrounds to assist Deerfield Fire and Deerfield Rescue with a motor vehicle accident rollover, one pinned under the vehicle. Rescue 1 and Engine 2 responded at the Paramedic level, and C-1 responded to assist with command. First arriving units from Deerfield found an SUV on its side with a male subject trapped underneath of the vehicle. A passenger in the same vehicle had self-extricated and was walking around on scene. The vehicle was rolled off of the top of the patient who was immobilized and extricated, but was pulseless and not breathing. Advanced care was provided by staff of Candia Fire-Rescue and Exeter ALS, but the patient was declared deceased on scene. Candia units were able to clear in about an hour. In addition to units from Candia, Deerfield Fire, Deerfield Rescue, Raymond Ambulance, Exeter ALS, Deerfield PD, Candia PD, Northwood PD, and the State of New Hampshire Medical Examiner were on scene. Click Here for Pictures July 14, 2007 Mutual Aid - Structure Fire 50 Tanker 1 was requested to the scene of a structure fire in Raymond at about 11:30 pm. The tanker supplied water for suppression operations, and had been requested on the second alarm. One Raymond firefighter was transported to the hospital with smoke inhalation. July 12, 2007 Mutual Aid - Structure Fire Candia Fire-Rescue was requested to respond to Hooksett on the third alarm for a structure fire in the Campbell Hills section of town. 50 Engine 2 responded with a crew of 5 to the scene. The fire involved a few vehicles in an attached garage, and the multiple alarms were requested very quickly due to the immense size of the house and potential for rapid fire spread. Fortunately, early arriving crews from Hooksett and the surrounding towns prevented the fire from involving the house. The crew from Engine 2 was not needed, and was able to clear about 30 minutes after arrival. June 18, 2007 Motor Vehicle Collision The driver of a pickup truck became distracted and drove off the road just after Exit 3 on Route 101, striking a tree at the bottom of the embankment at about 7:00 P.M. The vehicle ended up in a very wet area just below a drainage culvert, making extrication of the patient a difficult and muddy endeavor. As the subject was complaining of back and neck pain, the crew of Engine 2, Rescue 1, and Rockingham ALS-5 immobilized the patient who was carefully extricated and placed in a Stokes basket for transport back to the waiting ambulance. ALS-5 transported one to the Elliot Hospital and Candia crews were able to clear in about 40 minutes. Click Here for Pictures June 3, 2007 Motor Vehicle Collision - Rollover Shortly after 10 A.M., Candia Fire-Rescue was dispatched to Route 101 westbound between exits two and three for a motor vehicle accident - rollover with injuries. Engine 2 and C-1 responded shortly after the tone as a crew was already at the station. While enroute, units were advised that the scene was just across the line into the Town of Auburn. Auburn was notified and requested all Candia units to continue. On arrival, Candia C-1 reported a single SUV in the break down lane that had rolled over, the occupants of which had self-extricated. Candia crews immediately began assessing and treating multiple patients along with Auburn Engine 1 and Rescue 1, and Candia Rescue 1. Due to the multiple injured patients, two more ambulances provided by the Derry Fire Department were requested to the scene, along with Auburn Engine 2 for scene safety. Once all the patients had been loaded into the ambulances, Candia crews were able to clear the scene after about 45 minutes. Special thanks to Derry Fire for providing the additional ambulance units, and the towns of Candia and Auburn for their quick actions. Click Here for Pictures May 11, 2007 Structure Fire Units from Candia-Fire rescue were alerted to a reported structure fire from a lightning strike on North Rd. at approximately 8:30am. Police arrived on scene and reported smoke showing from the rear of the building. A first alarm assignment was requested, bringing Engine 1, Engine 2, and Tanker 1, as well as engines from Deerfield and Raymond and a ladder from Hooksett to the scene. First arriving companies found smoke and fire showing from the rear of the building. Crews made an interior attack and found fire in the roof of an addition which had spread into the wall and attic space of the main part of the house. The fire was knocked down quickly and was confined to these areas of the building. After extensive overhaul, the call was declared under control, about 90 minutes after the initial dispatch. Crews were able to clear after about 2 hours on scene. Initial investigation showed the fire was caused by a lightning strike during a strong shower which passed through the area. Mutual aid was provided by Rockingham Ambulance, Deerfield Fire, Raymond Fire, Hooksett Fire, and Auburn Fire. Click Here for Pictures April 17, 2007 Motor Vehicle Collision - Rollover Candia Fire-Rescue was alerted to a reported motor vehicle collision - rollover with entrapment on Brown Road. Auburn Fire-Rescue was alerted for additional personnel and equipment on the initial dispatch. Upon arrival, units found a single vehicle on the driver's side. Crews quickly determined the lone occupant was not injured, but was unable to free herself from the vehicle. The vehicle was stabilized and entry was gained through the rear window to allow access for rescuers. The sunroof and windshield of the vehicle were removed, and the patient was able to self-extricate. The vehicle appears to have gone off the road and struck a tree, rolling the vehicle onto the side. Crews were able to clear in about 40 minutes. Click Here for Pictures April 15-16, 2007 Floods Cause Damage Throughout Candia Torrential rains caused extremely high water levels throughout Candia over a period of two days. Road erosion was a significant concern, as three bridges were closed due to large amounts of supporting material being washed away. Crews responded to a total of 18 calls for service, including a water rescue at approximately 6:00am on Monday. One person was assisted in leaving his vehicle on Depot Road after it became disabled in high water. Other calls included an odor of gas investigation and multiple water calls. Phone lines have been knocked out for a couple of days, and reports are that service will not be completely restored for weeks. Click Here for Pictures April 4, 2007 Motor Vehicle Collision Around 3 P.M. this afternoon, the Candia Fire-Rescue Department was dispatched to a single motor vehicle accident with injury, car into a tree. Engine 2 responded with extra caution, as a late season nor'easter was already causing slippery roads. Upon arrival, Engine 2 found a SUV that hit a tree head on. The driver was evaluated and refused care. All units were clear in about 30 minutes. Click Here for Pictures April 2, 2007 Motor Vehicle Collision - Rollover
At approximately 12:40 this afternoon, Candia
Fire-Rescue was dispatched for a motor vehicle accident on route 101,
reported to be a rollover with injuries and entrapment. While units were
enroute, 911 updated the responding units that the accident was in
Raymond, and all subjects were out of the vehicle with minor injuries.
Upon arrival, units found a single midsize vehicle facing the opposite
direction in the breakdown lane. The patient stated they lost control
when they hit the rumble strip, and rolled over several times. The
patient was evaluated by Raymond Ambulance and transported to the
Elliot Hospital. Candia units cleared after a short time on scene while
Raymond Fire secured the vehicle. All units were clear in about 30
minutes. Special thanks to Auburn Fire who also responded Click Here for Pictures
Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision Candia Fire-Rescue was alerted at 2:48 AM for a reported vehicle into a tree, tree into a house on Deerfield Road. Engine 2, Rescue 1, and Utility 1 responded, with C1 in command. First arriving units found a small sedan on its side with its roof crushed nearly to the floorboards by a large pine tree. The vehicle, which appeared to have been traveling at a very high rate of speed, crashed through a snowbank, becoming airborne and rotating, then struck a large pine tree roof-first. This pine tree snapped off at ground level. The vehicle continued through another small tree and slammed into a group of larger trees, crushing the original pine tree into the roof and passenger compartment of the vehicle. Due to the massive amount of damage to the car, there was no way to ascertain the status of any people who may have been in the vehicle at the time of the collision. Attempts were made to gain access to the patient while the vehicle was still on its side against the tree, but were unsuccessful. Trees and branches were cut away from the vehicle and it was pulled off the tree by a waiting wrecker. Once this had been accomplished, it was determined that there was a patient in the vehicle, and that he had been killed in the collision. All rescue operations ceased at that time while state and local police, medical examiner, and medical referee conducted their investigation. Once the initial investigation was completed, the flattened roof was removed in order to remove the patient. Crews were on scene for more than 4 hours, lighting the scene and providing assistance as needed. No damage was done to the house, as had been initially reported, but the windows of a vehicle parked in the driveway were broken by flying debris. Deerfield Fire and Raymond Ambulance also provided mutual aid assistance for this incident. Click Here for Pictures January 17, 2007 Chimney Fire At approximately 5:30 this morning, Candia Fire-Rescue was dispatched for a reported chimney fire on Patten Hill Road. Engine 1 and Tanker 1 responded. First arriving units found a two-story split level home with fire showing from the chimney. Auburn Fire's Engine 1, a 75-foot quint, was requested to the scene for their aerial device due to the treacherous icy conditions on the roof which made the use of ground ladders impossible. Crews removed the remaining fireplace material and extinguished the smoldering fire, which had not extended into the house. After conditions were re-checked to ensure no hot spots remained, crews cleared the scene about an hour and a half after dispatch. The fire appeared to have been caused by an improper chimney installation. Special thanks to Auburn Fire for their assistance on this call. January 16, 2007 Motor Vehicle Collision - Rollover Units from Candia Fire-Rescue were alerted to respond to a reported motor vehicle accident on High Street at about 9:50 this evening. Engine 2 and Rescue 1 responded, along with Rockingham Ambulance. First arriving units found a single vehicle which had rolled over, coming to rest on its wheels against a stone wall. The single occupant had already exited the vehicle. This patient was evaluated for minor injuries, but refused transport to the hospital. The scene was secured and units were able to clear in about 40 minutes. Click Here for Pictures January 10, 2007 Mutual Aid - Motor Vehicle Collision Candia Fire-Rescue was alerted to respond to a reported motor vehicle collision - rollover with entrapment on Route 101 eastbound East of Exit 3. Engine 2 and Rescue 1 responded with a total of 7 firefighters. Raymond Ambulance also responded. When the ambulance arrived on the scene, it was determined that the accident, although having started in Candia, had ended in Raymond. Raymond's Engine 1 and Rescue 1 had already been alerted to respond due to potential entrapment, and arrived on the scene shortly before the Candia units. Candia personnel stood by while Raymond Ambulance and Fire crews extricated the patient. Candia units were able to clear in about 10 minutes. Click Here for Pictures January 1, 2007 Structure Fire At approximately 3:00am on January 1st, Candia Fire-Rescue was alerted to respond to a report of a chimney fire with possible extension to a house on Chester Turnpike. A first alarm assignment was dispatched, starting mutual aid companies from surrounding towns. Units responding (Engine 1, Engine 2, and Tanker 1) had to contend with a steady freezing rain and extremely slippery driving conditions. Reports from police arriving on scene indicated that the house was already well-involved. First arriving fire units found fire showing from the second floor and beginning to come through the roof of the ell of a two story wood frame balloon construction house. Second and third alarms were sounded, bringing additional resources to the scene. Handlines were put in operation in the first and second floor of the main part of the house, limiting the amount of fire spread to that portion of the building. As the roof of the ell collapsed, Auburn's Engine 1, a 75-foot quint, was placed into ladder pipe service, knocking down the bulk of the fire. Crews performed extensive overhaul, extinguishing the rest of the fire. Firefighters remained on scene for approximately 3 hours. The fire appears to have been caused by a fire in the chimney which extended to the house. Two firefighters sustained minor injuries while battling they blaze and were treated and released from a local hospital. Special thanks to the multiple mutual aid companies who assisted Candia Fire-Rescue at this incident, including Auburn, Chester, Derry, Deerfield, Raymond, Hooksett, Sandown, Fremont, and Epping, as well as Rockingham and Raymond Ambulance and the American Red Cross. Click Here for Pictures December 30, 2006 Fire in Recreational Vehicle Candia Fire-Rescue responded to a report of a camper on fire with no exposures on Main Street at approximately 2:30 in the afternoon. Engine 1 and Tanker 1 responded, with a total of 5 firefighters, plus another 4 firefighters who responded directly to the scene. First arriving units found a small trailer-type RV with fire showing from the exterior. It was determined that no one was in the vehicle. Crews initiated an attack and dismantled the entire structure looking for hot spots. The cause is under investigation, but it appears that the fire may have originated in a heater. No one was injured in the fire and crews were able to clear in about 90 minutes. Click Here for Pictures Earlier in the day, crews responded to two motor vehicle collisions, neither of which had any personal injury. Both were attributed to the snowy conditions provided by this season's first significant snowfall. December 17, 2006 Simultaneous Motor Vehicle Collisions At 3:25 in the morning, Candia Fire-Rescue was alerted for a reported motor vehicle collision - rollover, with injury on High St. First arriving units found an overturned pickup truck, but were unable to locate a patient. Crews initiated a search, but were unable to find a victim at the scene. Fortunately, the subject had walked away from the scene and was found a short distance away in the Town of Hooksett. Crews remained on scene for approximately 2 hours to assist in cleanup and traffic control. Apparatus responding included Engine 2 and Rescue 1. Click Here for Pictures While crews were still searching for the victim of the first accident, Candia was alerted for yet another motor vehicle collision with injury, this time on the off ramp from Route 101 Eastbound. Engine 2, 50C1, and Rockingham ALS-5 responded from the other scene. Upon arrival, crews found a single pickup truck which had left the off ramp and overturned multiple times, landing approximately 300 feet from the point where it left the roadway. The driver of the vehicle was able to self-extricate and was evaluated by the crew of Engine 2 and ALS-5. The subject was transported to Elliot Hospital for evaluation. Crews cleared the scene in about half an hour. December 9, 2006 Auto Extrication/Car Fire Training Candia Fire-Rescue assisted the New England EMS Institute with auto extrication training at Car World in Candia. The EMT-Basic students were shown basic extrication techniques and were able to practice these skills in a realistic simulation. Afterwards, various tools were demonstrated, including hydraulic rescue tools (Jaws of Life). After the extrication training was completed, firefighters from Candia Fire-Rescue practiced their car fire extinguishing skills in a live-fire drill. Thanks to Car World for their continued support in this training exercise! December 7, 2006 Motor Vehicle Collision Candia Fire-Rescue responded to a report of a vehicle into the woods at the intersection of Langford Rd. and Raymond Rd. at approximately 9:30 in the evening. Upon arrival, Engine 2 found a car into the woods with one person still in the vehicle. Firefighters used a chainsaw to remove brush obstructing the vehicle while medical personnel attended to the patient. After about a 15 minute extrication, the patient was immobilized and transferred to the care of Rockingham ALS-5. The patient was transported to the Elliot Hospital. Candia units were able to clear in about 40 minutes. November 30, 2006 Motor Vehicle Collision With Utility Pole Candia Fire-Rescue responded to a report of a motor vehicle into a utility pole on Raymond Road at around 5:15pm. First arriving units found a pickup truck had crashed through a utility pole and came to rest against a tree. Although there were no serious injuries, power was disrupted through much of the eastern part of the town for nearly 7 hours as crews worked through the night to restore service. Click Here for Pictures Later in the evening, Engine 2 and Rescue 1 responded to Route 101 Westbound in the area of Patten Hill Road for a reported MVC with a deer involved. Initial reports indicated personal injury. Upon arrival, crews found an SUV had struck a deer, causing significant damage to the vehicle and causing the death of the deer. Fortunately, the passengers of the vehicle were not injured. Crews cleared debris from the scene and were placed in service in about 30 minutes. November 19, 2006 Multiple Calls for Service Crews from Candia Fire-Rescue were kept busy on this Sunday with three calls for service. The first call of the day was a medical, followed later in the afternoon by a well-involved car fire. Engine 2 responded with 4 personnel. Upon arrival, crews found a small vehicle with fire showing from the engine compartment. The fire was quickly extinguished and some belongings were salvaged from the trunk of the car. Later in the evening, Candia Fire-Rescue was alerted to a report of a building fire. Engines 1 and 2, Tank 1, and Rescue 1 responded on the first alarm. First arriving officers found smoke in the building. After investigation, it was determined that a malfunctioning pellet stove was the cause of the smoke, and there was no fire. Crews were able to clear the scene in about 30 minutes. Click Here for Car Fire Pictures November 16, 2006 Mutual Aid Structure Fire Candia Fire-Rescue was alerted to respond to Hooksett to assist at the scene of a structure fire. First arriving units from Hooksett found a mobile home well involved and initiated an exterior attack. Candia Engine 2 responded with a crew of 4 firefighters. Upon arrival, Engine 2 was assigned to staging and was not utilized. As operations began wrapping up, Engine 2 was assigned to station coverage at Hooksett's Central Station. September 28, 2006 - October 1, 2006 Deerfield Fair EMS Standby Members of Candia Fire-Rescue assisted Deerfield Rescue and Raymond Ambulance in providing emergency medical services at the 130th Deerfield Fair, which ran from September 28th through October 1st. The compliment of EMS providers included at least one EMT-Paramedic for the majority of each day of the fair. In addition, standby crews made up of other members of Candia Fire-Rescue were provided in the Town of Candia, ensuring continuous coverage throughout the fair. September 23, 2006 Old Home Day This year's Old Home Day was especially poignant for members of Candia Fire-Rescue as they welcomed home one of their own, Lance Cpl. Louis Stamatelos, USMC, who was injured in the line of duty while serving in Iraq. Louis had been shot by a sniper in his right shoulder more than two months prior, and had spent that time in military hospitals in Germany, Maryland, and Florida. Louis was able to return to New Hampshire just two days before Old Home Day, and was welcomed at Manchester-Boston Regional Airport by his friends, family, and fellow firefighters. Louis was the special guest of honor for the Old Home Day parade, riding prominently on Engine 2 in a light drizzle. More than 100 people lined the streets for the parade despite the weather, which followed another successful breakfast at the Candia Fire-Rescue station. Candia Firefighters also arranged to have the Bedford Fire Department's fire safety trailer available for display at Moore Park. This trailer allows children and their parents to practice fire-safety skills, such as being aware of fire alarms, checking doors for heat, and alternative ways of exiting a building involved in fire. Special thanks to Bedford Fire for the use of this valuable piece of equipment! September 16, 2006 Reach The Beach Relay Event Members of Candia Fire-Rescue again assisted with the annual Reach The Beach (RTB) relay race, providing support by helping to check in runners, and by having a full breakfast available. Unlike other years, the breakfast was held in the gymnasium of the Henry Moore School, just across the street from the station. This facility limited the number of people who needed to cross busy Deerfield Road, one of the main thoroughfares through Candia, and also provided easier access and better facilities to patrons. The event was a huge success, with far more runners and team members participating in the breakfast than were anticipated! Members began preparing breakfast at approximately 4:00am, and the last team had been checked in by 10:30 am. Reach the Beach is a 200-mile relay race which begins in North Conway, NH, and ends more than 24 hours later at Hampton Beach. Teams generally consist of 6 to 12 people who each run an average of 20 miles, sometimes during the middle of the night! For further information, visit the Reach the Beach website at http://www.rtbrelay.com/. September 11, 2006 Motor Vehicle Collision Involving Construction Equipment Members from Candia Fire-Rescue responded to Route 101 at Old Candia Road for a reported motor vehicle accident with an excavator that had rolled over. First arriving units found an approximately 12 ton excavator lying on its side in the median between the 101 on ramp and Old Candia Road. Crews were made aware of diesel leaking from the tank. Candia crews quickly stopped the fuel from leaking and were clear of the scene in about 20 minutes. Click Here for Pictures August 21, 2006 Motor Vehicle Collision - Rollover Units from Candia Fire-Rescue responded yet again to Route 101 westbound, this time west of Exit 3, for a reported rollover. Upon arrival, personnel from Engine 2 and Rescue 1 found a single vehicle on its wheels in the left hand lane of Route 101 westbound. The driver of the vehicle had been thrown into the back seat, but was able to extricate herself prior to arrival of Candia Fire-Rescue. One patient was transported for evaluation to a local hospital by Raymond 41-A1. August 19, 2006 Auto Extrication Training Members of Candia Fire-Rescue assisted the staff of the New England EMS Institute in teaching the latest class of EMT-Basic students the skill of auto extrication at Car World in Candia. This gave the students an excellent opportunity to practice these critical evolutions, and gave Candia firefighters practice on their rescue and extrication tools. After extrications were completed, the firefighters used one vehicle to practice extinguishing car fires. Special thanks to Car World for their assistance with this training exercise. Click Here for Pictures August 11, 2006 Motor Vehicle Collision - Rollover Engine 2 once again responded to Route 101 westbound just east of Exit 3 for a reported rollover. Upon arrival, the crew of Engine 2 and Rockingham ALS-5 found a small SUV which had overturned in the median of Route 101, ejecting one patient from the vehicle. The vehicle remained precariously perched on the driver's side. The patient had only minor injuries and was treated on scene by Candia Fire-Rescue personnel, then transported to CMC by ALS-5. The crew of Engine 2 stood by at the scene after the patient had been transported until the vehicle had been righted. Click Here for Pictures August 9, 2006 Motorcycle Accident Crews from Candia Fire-Rescue responded to a report of a motorcycle accident at Old Candia Rd. and Old Manchester Rd. Upon arrival, personnel from Engine 2 and Rescue 1 found a single motorcycle on its side with one rider laying in the street with minor injuries. It is unclear what caused the accident, as there were no other vehicles on the road and no witnesses to the accident. One patient was packaged and transported to the Elliot Hospital by Rockingham ALS-6. August 8, 2006 Motor Vehicle Collision - Rollover Just prior to 4:00pm, units from Candia Fire-Rescue and Rockingham Ambulance were alerted for a motor vehicle collision rollover on Route 101 eastbound east of Exit 3. During response, units were advised that 3 patients had been ejected from the vehicle. Upon hearing this update, an additional ambulance from Rockingham and and additional ambulance from Raymond was requested, as well as a helicopter from Dartmouth-Hitchcock Advanced Response Team, and an engine company from Raymond. Unfortunately, the helicopter was not available in a short amount of time, and was cancelled. Upon arrival, three patients were found to have been ejected from an SUV, one priority 1 trauma and two priority 2 traumas. The priority 1 trauma was packaged by Raymond 41-A1 and transported to the Elliot Hospital. The two priority 2 traumas were treated by crews from Rockingham Ambulance, one transported by ALS-5 to the Elliot and one transported by NE-28 to CMC. Candia apparatus on scene included Engine 2 and Rescue 1, with 50-C1 in command. Click Here for Pictures August 5, 2006 Multiple Calls for Service Candia Fire-Rescue responded to multiple calls for service on Saturday, August 5. At approximately 7:05 in the morning, Tank 1 was requested to respond to Hudson, about 30 miles away, for a multiple alarm fire at a shipping pallet facility. No water supply was available at the scene, requiring the use of multiple tankers from up to 40 miles away. Units were alerted to a reported motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Exit 3 of Route 101 and Old Candia Road around 1:30 in the afternoon. Upon arrival, members from Engine 2 and Rescue 1 found two vehicles which had struck each other nearly head-on, spinning one vehicle far into the median. A total of five patients were treated and transported to the Elliot Hospital by Rockingham Ambulance and two ambulances from Raymond Ambulance, mostly with minor injuries. One patient did require extrication using hydraulic rescue tools. Later in the evening, Engine 2 responded to a working car fire on Route 101 Eastbound just East of Exit 3. A total of 6 personnel responded with the engine. February 18, 2006 4 Alarm Structure Fire Units from Candia Fire-Rescue were alerted at 8:14 pm for a reported structure fire on Critchett Road. Additional information was received as units called en route that there was smoke in the living room of the residence. At the time of the call, Engine 2 was on a mutual aid response to Deerfield, and there was an additional standby crew at the station. Engine 1 responded almost immediately after the initial alarm and arrived to find smoke showing from the structure. Tanker 1 and Engine 2 arrived shortly after and established command. As there was smoke showing, C-1 (Chief Cartier) requested the second alarm. Crews attempted to advance handlines through the front door, but found the stairs leading to the second floor had already collapsed. Ladders were thrown and access was gained to the second story through a window. Attack crews found the fire had already extended throughout the attic and much of the second story was involved. Auburn's Engine 1 (A 75-foot quint) extended their aerial device to the roof and began master stream operations on the rear collapsed section of roof. Crews were evacuated as the front portion of the roof began to collapse, and the bulk of the fire was knocked down by the master stream. Crews re-entered with handlines and mopped up the rest of the hot spots while salvage and overhaul operations began. While the upper floor was almost completely destroyed, most of the first floor was protected and many of the family's belongings were safely removed. In addition to the fire, crews had to battle temperatures hovering around 4 degrees above zero which caused frozen hoselines, ladders, trucks, and left a thick layer of ice over the entire scene. The low temperature was also the reason for four alarms, as crews needed to be rotated out for extensive rehab. No injuries were reported although some firefighters were treated for hypothermia. Crews were released from the scene at 11:30. The initial investigation showed that the fire may have started in the chimney, however a final official determination of cause has not been released. Mutual aid was provided by Rockingham Ambulance, Deerfield, Raymond, Auburn, Hooksett, Derry, Fremont, and Epping. Special thanks to these departments for their much-needed assistance at this difficult scene. August 19, 2005 Working Structure Fire At 3:28 am, Candia Fire-Rescue responded to a reported electrical fire in the attic at a residence on Old Candia Road. Upon arrival, Engine 1, Tanker 1 and 50 C-1 (Chief Cartier) found moderate to heavy smoke showing from the eaves and gable end of a 75 year old single story wood-framed structure. Due to the age of the structure and the possibility for rapid spread, C-1 called for a second alarm bringing a ladder and rescue from Auburn and apparatus from Raymond, Hooksett and Deerfield. Due to limited access to the attic, crews immediately began pulling ceilings and cutting a vent hole in the roof. The Department's new Thermal Imaging Camera was utilized to isolate the area of the fire, keeping damage to a minimum. The under control was sounded at approximately 4:30 am and crews cleared the scene by 5:45 am. July 30, 2005 Live Fire Training Members of Candia Fire- Rescue were able to hone their skills at a live fire training exercise early in the morning of July 30th. Crews practiced search and rescue, ventilation, and fire containment procedures in a house donated to the department for this purpose. After the completion of these evolutions, the house was allowed to burn down. The house was donated to the department by Kimberly (a member of Candia Fire-Rescue) and Ken Dome. Special thanks to them and the other companies present at this exercise, including Rockingham Ambulance, Raymond Fire Department, Deerfield Fire Department, and Chester Fire Department. July 17, 2005 Motor Vehicle Accident - Rollover with Entrapment At about 4:00 pm this afternoon, Candia Fire-Rescue responded to a reported motor vehicle accident-rollover with one still entrapped in the vehicle on North Road. Engine 2 and Rescue 1 responded and arrived on scene to find a single motor vehicle on its side with the driver still in the vehicle. The driver had sustained only minor injuries, but could not extricate herself from the sedan. After stabilizing the vehicle, crews removed the windshield and extricated the patient. After being assessed by Exeter Hospital ALS personnel, Raymond's 41-A1 transported the patient to the Elliot Hospital for evaluation and treatment. July 16, 2005 Motor Vehicle Accident with Injury Candia Fire-Rescue responded to a reported motor vehicle accident on Old Candia Road just before midnight. First arriving units found a single vehicle into a tree. The vehicle was a small pickup truck which had significant damage to the front end. Fortunately, the driver, who had reportedly fallen asleep at the wheel, was wearing their seatbelt and escaped serious injury. One patient was transported to the Elliot Hospital by Rockingham ALS-5 for evaluation. Engine 2 responded on the call. July 4, 2005 Candia Fire-Rescue Aids in Search and Rescue Effort Members of Candia Fire-Rescue, along with Candia and Auburn Police and the Auburn Fire Department, participated in a search for a missing person around Tower Hill Pond along the Candia/Auburn Border during the night on July 4th. A subject had reportedly wandered into the woods after receiving a head injury. After an approximately 90-minute search, the subject was found by an Auburn police officer and his canine partner. The subject was found to have a minor head injury, but declined medical treatment and transport. Derry Medic One was on scene to provide medical attention as necessary. June 29, 2005 Structure Fire in Hooksett During a strong thunderstorm which came through the area at about 2:30pm, the Hooksett Fire Department was dispatched for a building fire on Lantern Lane. Candia Fire-Rescue is alerted for a tanker for any reported building fire in this section of Hooksett, due to the lack of hydrants. Since there was an engine crew in the station at the time of the call, Tanker 1 and Engine 2 both responded on the first alarm. First arriving Hooksett crews found a fire in the basement which appeared to have been caused by a lightning strike. By the time Candia crews arrived, the bulk of the fire had been knocked down. Engine 2 assisted with overhaul operations and Tanker 1 was not utilized. There was smoke damage throughout the house, but fire damage was limited mostly to the basement. Candia crews were able to clear in about 40 minutes. June 27, 2005 Multiple Patients Injured at Motor Vehicle Accident Just before 5:00pm, Candia Fire-Rescue was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident with reported injuries on Raymond Road, a 50-mph 4-lane undivided highway. Engine 2 and Rescue 1 responded with Rockingham ALS-5 and Northeast-24, a basic life support ambulance from Rockingham Ambulance. Upon arrival, CFR units found a single vehicle into a utility pole. There was significant damage to the front of the vehicle, and the utility pole had been broken by the impact. All patients had self-extricated, but one patient had a potentially serious injury to the leg. EMS personnel treated and packaged four patients who all were transported to the Elliot Hospital. The Elliot Hospital Trauma Team was placed on alert due to the extreme mechanism of injury and the serious leg injury to one of the patients. April 9, 2005 Auto Extrication and Vehicle Fire Training Candia Fire Rescue held a combination patient auto extrication exercise and a live fire training exercise at Car World in Candia. The auto extrication exercise is conducted in conjunction with the New England Emergency Medical Services Institute and is part of the EMT-Basic program offered by the Institute. 13 students worked with Department personnel in putting the classroom skills to use in practical scenarios utilizing actual vehicles. Department personnel also sharpened their skills in extinguishing actual vehicle fires. The department wishes to recognize Jeff Kantor, owner of Car World for his generosity in allowing the use of his facility and for supplying vehicles for this training. By being able to utilize actual vehicles for the training, all participants are able to train in actual situations in a controlled manner, thus providing unequalled experience.
Department Transition Completed At 1201 hours on April 1, 2005, the Candia Fire-Rescue Department officially began providing emergency services to the Town of Candia. A formal transfer ceremony was held at 0800 hours at the fire station with the full Board of Selectmen, Association President (and fire Lt.) George Denoncourt and Fire Chief Rudy Cartier Jr. in attendance. The transfer ceremony represented the culmination of a three year process started by then Association President Rick Swain and Fire Chief Les Cartier who were also in attendance.
Motor Vehicle Accident with Injuries At approximately 6:55 am, Engine 2 and Rescue 1 responded to a reported motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Routes 27 and 43. Upon arrival, units found a 2-vehicle rear-end accident. All occupants had exited the vehicles. Injuries were minor, with only one person being transported to the hospital via Rockingham ALS-5. Units cleared in about 40 minutes. January 24, 2004 Chester Structure Fire A kitchen fire in Chester rapidly escalated to 3 alarms after the fire extended into the walls, bringing in aid from the surrounding companies. Despite a good knockdown by first arriving Chester crews, the fire was able to get into the walls of this balloon-construction farmhouse and quickly extended into the attic. Candia's Engine 2 and Tanker 1 responded to the scene on the third alarm. Crews were hampered by temperatures hovering around 10 degrees below zero, causing pumpers to fail and water to freeze in tankers. Despite the best efforts of all crews involved, nearly the entire house was gutted. Fortunately, crews were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the nearby barn, which housed many animals. At the height of the fire, crews from Chester, Auburn, Derry, East Derry, Raymond, Candia, Londonderry, and other departments were working. The American Red Cross provided disaster relief to the family and rehabilitation services for the cold and exhausted firefighters. January 17, 2004 Candia Responds on Mutual Aid Calls A fire in Epping on Jan. 17 went to four alarms, requiring coverage from multiple surrounding companies. Candia sent Tanker 1 to Epping's station to provide coverage while their units were operating on the fireground. Earlier in the day, units from Candia were requested to respond to a head-on motor vehicle accident on Route 43 in Deerfield by the Deerfield Fair Grounds. Two patients were transported to the Elliot Hospital, the regional trauma center, where the trauma team was activated for both patients. January 5, 2004 Snowstorm Causes Two Minor Accidents A small snowstorm passing through the area caused few problems for the CVFD. Two minor motor vehicle accidents were reported during the duration of the storm. There were no injuries in either incident. December 21, 2003 Candia Volunteers Respond to Multiple Calls for Service This Sunday proved to be a busy one for the members of the CVFD. Units were first dispatched in the late morning for an EMS call. Just a few hours later, Engine 2 and Rescue 1 responded to a reported motor vehicle accident on Route 101 with fire and injuries. Engine 2 arrived on scene first to find a small SUV on its side with fire showing from the engine compartment which was extinguished shortly after arrival. All occupants had safely exited the vehicle and were evaluated by the crew of Rescue 1. There were no injuries. Units had not yet cleared the scene when another EMS call was dispatched. Rescue 1 responded from the scene and handled the call. Special thanks to the members of the department for donating so much of their time during this busy time of year. Fire Act Grant Approved
On October 28, 2004, Senator Judd Gregg, Representative
Jeb Bradley, and Chief Rudy
Cartier announced that Candia Fire Rescue would be the recipient of a Fire
Act Grant in the amount of $225,000 with $25,000 in matching funds from the
town. These funds will be used to
offset the cost of a new pumper-tanker to be placed in service within the
next 2 years. This award will allow the department to greatly improve
its fire protection capabilities to the Town of Candia and the surrounding
communities with very little cost to the taxpayers of Candia. A truck
committee has been set up to plan the building of the new unit, with a
tentative deadline of December for the specifications to be ready.
Delivery is planned for the summer of 2005. October 28, 2004 Candia Fire Rescue Receives Substantial Fire Grant Candia Fire Rescue is proud to announce the awarding of a Fire Act grant to the department in the amount of $225,000. These funds, provided though the federal government, will be put towards the purchase of a new pumper-tanker to be placed in service within the next two years. Check the Announcements section for more information in the coming days. October 26, 2004 New Equipment Placed in Service Candia Fire-Rescue has placed in service a new Cutters Edge gasoline-powered circular saw to be used for ventilation. This unit replaces a chainsaw-type unit that will now be placed on Engine 2. The new saw has been placed on Engine 1. September 30, 2004 through October 3, 2004 Mutual Aid Standby Once again, Candia Fire-Rescue helped to provide EMS services at the Deerfield Fair. Members from Candia volunteered their time to help Deerfield Rescue provide medical services for this large agricultural fair. July 29, 2004 Motor Vehicle Accident - Rollover Engine 2 and Rescue 1 responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident rollover between exits 2 and 3 on Route 101 Westbound at about 03:30. Units arrived on scene to find a small pickup truck on its wheels off the slow shoulder. The driver had drifted off, hit the rumble strip on the high-speed side of the highway, over-corrected and lost control of his vehicle. The vehicle rolled over an undetermined number of times, causing moderate damage. The driver, who was restrained, was the only occupant. He complained of minor injuries and was transported to the Elliot Hospital by Rockingham ALS-4 for evaluation and treatment. Units cleared the scene in about an hour. July 15, 2004 Motor Vehicle Accident - Rollover A vehicle was traveling westbound on Route 101 between exits 3 and 4 when the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to go off the road and roll over an undetermined number of times. The vehicle rolled up an embankment and came to rest on its wheels, causing it to coast back toward the highway. Fortunately, the vehicle stopped about 3 feet from the travel lanes. For safety, the breakdown and right-hand travel lane were closed during the incident. All occupants were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident. Upon arrival, Engine 2 and Rescue 1 found the occupants had self-extricated. There were a total of 5 patients, including two children. Only one patient had minor injuries, but due to the significant potential for injury, all persons were immobilized and transported to the Elliot Hospital for evaluation by Rockingham ALS-4 and ALS-5 and Raymond 41-A1. Candia Fire-Rescue units then assisted with cleanup and cleared the scene. June 25, 2004 Motor Vehicle Accident Units from the Candia Fire-Rescue Department were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident in front of a local gas station. Upon arrival, Engine 2 found two vehicles, one into an embankment and the other on the road. All persons involved had exited the vehicles prior to arrival. The vehicle on the embankment had moderate front-end damage, and the vehicle on the road had major damage to the rear. Upon interview of the patients, it was determined that the vehicle in the embankment had struck the other vehicle from the rear at a high rate of speed, approximately 50 m.p.h. Fortunately, there was very little fuel in the vehicle damaged in the rear, preventing a major incident. Injuries were minor and one patient was transported by Rockingham ALS-4 to the Elliot Hospital for evaluation and treatment. November 28, 2003 Motor Vehicle Accident With Injuries A woman was seriously injured after the pickup truck she was riding in collided with a deer. After swerving to avoid the animal, the truck hit the guardrail, seriously damaging the passenger side. Raymond Ambulance provided mutual aid on the call. November 6, 2003 Structure Fire Units from the Candia Vol. Fire Dept. responded to a reported chimney fire on Main Street. Upon arrival, crews found a chimney fire with smoke in the attic. Upon further investigation, extension into the attic was found. The fire was knocked down quickly and property damage was limited. October 20, 2003 Fatal Crash Involving School Bus A school bus carrying 45 high school students was struck by an SUV on Chester Road after the utility vehicle reportedly crossed the center line. The SUV hit the bus on the driver's side, causing the front axle of the bus to break off. The bus driver took evasive maneuvers in an attempt to avoid the crash, causing the bus to end up in a marsh. No injuries were suffered by the driver or students. However, 43-year-old Caroline Carnright of Candia, the driver of the SUV, was killed in the collision. She was not wearing a seatbelt. CVFD response was Engine 2 and Rescue 1 with 10 personnel. They were joined on scene by Candia, Auburn, Raymond, and New Hampshire State Police, along with the Department of Transportation and school administration officials. The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services and the Southeastern NH Haz-Mat team were alerted to the scene for a possible 40-gallon diesel fuel leak into the marsh. (Note: Candia has just become a member of the Southeast New Hampshire Haz-Mat district.) The fuel leak was contained to 5 to 10 gallons. Clean Harbors was contacted for cleanup. The road was closed for approximately 5 hours for victim removal (requiring the use of heavy rescue tools), accident reconstruction, and vehicle removal. The crisis management team at Central High School in Manchester was activated for the students. September 25-28, 2003 Members of the Candia Volunteer Fire Department helped to perform EMS duties at the Deerfield Fair. Each year, the CVFD helps to provide emergency on-site medical care to this large agricultural fair. This year, unfortunately, rain was the prevailing weather, causing a low turnout, but also limiting the number of injuries and illnesses suffered. September 22, 2003 The Candia Volunteer Fire Department regretfully announces the passing of Retired Chief Norman R. Stevens at 01:30 on September 22, 2003 in Bangor, ME. Chief Stevens served with the Candia Volunteer Fire Department for over thirty years, ten of those as Chief.
